His Holiness the Dalai Lama, leader of the Tibetan people and Nobel Peace Laureate, is a remarkable Buddhist teacher and scholar, versed in the teachings of all the schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Here are some of my favorite quotes attributed to the Dalai Lama:
"All major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives."
"Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions."
"Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them."
"The purpose of our lives is to be happy."
Little known to most is Dalai's focus on Yoga to enhance the quality of his life, and others he teaches.
Did you know the Dalai Lama is a well-known Yoga author? That's right! One of his books, "Yoga Tantra: Paths to Magical Feats" has been lauded as an "extraordinary book that opens the door to the topic of Yoga Tantra"
On the path to enlightenment: "accumulating merit in order to benefit all sentient beings is an important accomplishment". Further, the focus should be on "development of calm abiding and special insight".
What might any of this have to do with what an effective weight loss diet consists of?
Well, funny you might...
One of the least focused aspects of what an effective weight loss diet should consist of is stress, or better said, the lack of stress in one's life.
Does your mind regularly race? Does it vacillate all over the place? Because if it does, that is causing you stress.
"So what!", you might be thinking, "a little bit of stress can't hurt me, it's part of our daily lives and we just have to deal with it", you add.
Not so, my errant philosopher friend. Did you know that stress is one of the body,s biggest "agers"? More specifically, not stress itself, but your body's response to the stress is what actually damages you.
Your body has an "autonomic" response system that "revs its engine" when it encounters stress. This releases hormones that, if left unchecked and without an outlet, have the potential to significantly harm your body.
Also, the hormones dumped into your body by stress (such as cortisol, for one) are potent fat-gaining hormones. Too much cortisol will severely damper your "effective weight loss diet", no matter how good it is.
Yoga has been documented as one of the best stress-relievers. Also super effective is exercise. Both of these allow your body an "outlet" to reset your autonomic system.
Reduced stress, increased weight loss; two things most of us definitely need more of in today's world.
